April 2018 Newsletter

April 3, 2018 by Brenda Fairfax No Comment

Greetings,

Let us welcome the month of April and its showers … flowers will bloom, our yards will turn green, and the rain will be welcoming. Have you thought of visiting The Netherlands to see beautiful tulips? Contact us … it is a great time to visit and you will be amazed to see how big the tulips grow! I know some of us have them in our yards, but seeing them in Amsterdam or Rotterdam is something to be experience.

We always express the importance of purchasing insurance for your travels. Most of us think we do not need insurance, but we just never know when or if it will be needed. I received an email from a client that was scheduled to go on a cruise on April 6, 2018, and unfortunately her mother fell and broke her hip. Needless to say, the client had to cancel their cruise to care for her mother. I called the cruise line with this awful news and had to cancel the cruise … if only the client had purchased insurance! So, please consider purchasing insurance for your travel, as we just never know … better to be safe than sorry.

Travel abroad and fighting fraud. Please follow these steps to fight fraud abroad:

  1. Using public networks in an airport, café, or hotel can be dangerous from a cybersecurity standpoint as they can be hacked.
  2. Keep your boarding pass secure. There is more information contained on the barcode than you know, for example: your credit card information, if you are a frequent flyer, your address, and the list goes on!
  3. Pare down whenever possible. When you get ready to explore the town do not take more credit cards with you than you need. Also write the number down, and put your cards and the numbers in your safe.
  4. Your passport is very important. If you insist on taking it with you, take a copy and leave the passport in the safe.
  5. Inspect ATMs carefully. Use ATMs that are attached to a bank in well-lit areas that are under surveillance 24/7. If the machine looks suspicious, follow your mind as skimmer devices can be installed which will capture your PIN. Also hide the keypad when typing PIN.
  6. Convert currency strategically. You can order currency from your bank by telephone or online, but go to your financial institution and collect the currency in person. Most international airports have ATMs that are relatively safe to exchange money.

The Florida Keys … open for business after Hurricane Irma.

Another major Florida Keys resort has reopened after being heavily damaged by last September’s Hurricane Irma. Islamorada’s iconic Cheeca Lodge Resort & Spa has resumed operations, more than six months after Irma’s storm surge devastated the resort’s lobby and landscaping and destroyed a 525-foot-long (160-meter-long) oceanside dock. Tourism officials say 80% of the Florida Keys’ lodging properties can host visitors. In Key West, more than 92% of accommodations are open.

Passport Prices Have Increased  Getting a passport will cost $10 more for all U.S. travelers. The Department of State announced the passport execution fee will have increased which means all passports will cost more! According to the Department of State, the increase is due to the fact that two studies done by the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs and the U.S. Postal Service determined that the cost of processing a passport was “higher than the current fee of $25.”

Let Nomadic Star Travel, LLC help make your cruise booking truly complete. The other half of booking your cruise is helping you select and book your shore excursions and tours prior to the cruise. When we book your shore excursions and pre- and post-tours, you do not have to worry about wanting a selected excursion and it being sold out once you get onboard. Booking your excursions through the cruise line is safer also. Did you know the majority of first time cruisers and many repeaters do not want to select their own shore excursions and tours? Vacation time is irreplaceable time and money.

Identification for Flights. Check with your airlines. In a few months some states will no longer accept your driver’s license as formal identification when you enter the Transportation Security Administration’s line for flights. Some states have started issuing REAL ID on drivers license. I just received a duplicate driver license and it specifically has “NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION” … we will get new licenses when the current ones apply, but have our passports to check in for flights now. Please check your license.

Tips – security preparedness when flying. You may want to consider applying for the TSA Precheck or other trusted travel programs. Tweet or Message AskTSA to receive information on items that are allowed through security. Avoid overpacking your carry-on bag, and always consider checking bags when feasible. Have your valid ID and board pass readily available. Follow the liquids rule for liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes – they must be 3.4 ounces or less.

Airlines may owe you money. Did you know there are times the airlines likely owe you money?

  • If you are bumped from a flight, by law your carrier has to make it up to you, and the laws are very specific. Check with the Department of Transportation, and also ask desk agent nicely if you can secure meal vouchers as well (the meal vouchers are not a part of the law).
  • Severe weather or air traffic control issues does not entitle you, the travel to benefits, BUT if the holdup is due to a mechanical failure or crew delay, you might be able to negotiate a voucher to spend at the airport. Airlines are not required to compensate you, so keep this in mind.
  • It does not hurt trying to negotiate a meal voucher, or if there are no flights until the morning, a hotel room if you miss a connection.
  • If you luggage is lost some airlines compensate you after three days, no questions asked. Other airlines require you file a claim. It is a good idea to take photos of items packed in your luggage, especially if you are traveling with brand name clothing/shoes.

Travel is a huge investment … let us help you.
